When I first started Tang soo do I was very nervous because I have never done any kind of martial arts before. Luckily I already knew Liam as he is one of my dads best friends and I’m not saying that’s why I did Tang soo do but I may have been slightly nudged into it by my dad to support Liam. My dad and Liam took time to explain the things that would be expected of me and what I could achieve so I agreed to a few sessions

As one of Liam’s first students there weren’t any other girls at the class and that was scary for me but I soon realised there was something fun about being the girl that could inspire other girls to start. I started bringing my friends to some sessions and one of them signed up, Maya was as enthusiastic about girl power and learning to defend herself as I was. We made a real team. Soon enough another girl, Olivia joined us and we have become very good friends who motivate and encourage each other.

I remember my first grading at Pudsey, it was terrifying, I was so nervous but after seeing some of the women there I was determined to succeed like they have (Black belts and Masters). Everybody knows everybody in Tang Soo do and one thing my mum noticed was the real family feel amongst everybody. They are all about supporting each and all the students. Master Tang was very encouraging and calm, the whole day was (although very long because it was the first grading in 2 years so a lot to be done) great fun. He pushes us to be respectful, strong and confident to keep pushing ourselves. (My mum loves that he encouraged all of us thank our parents/carers for making all of this possible for us).

I have worked my way to my orange belt and am hoping to gain my green tag, fingers crossed. I have also agreed to take part in my first competition this year so wish me luck….. please!

At Christmas Denby Dale and Stocksbridge have an awards ceremony for the students where various awards are handed out. One special award is what everybody wants! When I got the student of the year award I was in shock I couldn’t believe it!, this meant that all the work I have been doing really paid off. It was a bit emotional because it meant all the leaders and Masters really recognised me and everybody was so proud for me. We stayed for a live singer and it was brilliant watching the masters dancing on the stage with their wives. Being so happy and merry in time for Christmas. My Tang Soo do family ❤️

The thing I love most about Tang Soo Do is everybody is loving, supportive, calm and eager to help you learn and grow.

I love the Masters that I am lucky to share this with, love Liam and all the black belts who come to each session and train with us and I love Tang soo do in general!
